IPv6 & the great porno giveaway

Posted in Cool Stuff, Web by Ro on the April 10th, 2007

OK, here’s an interesting one.

http://www.ipv6experiment.com/

In an effort to kick-start the adoption of IPv6 your.org has devised this interesting “experiment” in giving away 10GB of free porn to anyone who can access the service via an IPv6 address. Its an interesting idea, and not as crazy as it initially sounds. Like it or not its Pornography that has forced the web to develop in the way it has. Porn companies were the first to push for online purchasing and also led the way for highly compressed images (initially), but really took the lead with highly compressed movies. You could say “We wouldn’t be here today without pornography”, but that could be taken up the wrong way.

So 10GB of free pron will undoubtedly generate site traffic, but how much? Given that the experiment will be used to look at IP addresses, will people willingly participate in the service? Perhaps some movies from the Public domain torrents site should be used instead (example). Whatever the outcome is, I don’t think people will be screaming at their ISP’s to give them an IPv6 address to partake in this experiment or even after its finished. Not exactly the IPv6 “Killer App”.
There will be one group of people VERY happy though ….. That noise you hear is College students the world over rejoicing.
